About MCS

MCS Charitable Foundation is a new organisation. We were created by the government as part of changes in the ownership of MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme Service Company Limited).

MCS was originally set up by the UK Government in 2008 and has now been made independent in line with the government strategy of enabling the renewables market to be sustainable in the long-term. This process is referred to as ‘novation’. Novation took place in April 2018

The scheme has played an important part in the growth of the installation of renewables in homes and small businesses in the UK.

Originally set up by the UK Government in 2008, the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) has now been made independent in line with the government strategy of enabling the renewables market to be sustainable in the long-term. This process is referred to as ‘novation’. Novation took place on [DATE].

The Department wishes to thank all parties who have contributed to the development and success of the MCS.

The MCS Scheme has helped to drive up standards and to pave the way for the growth in low carbon electricity and heating in people’s homes.

Both MCS and ourselves are now independent of the government and managed by independent trustees (charity) and NED’s (company).

Our role is completely charitable, we give grants to support the low carbon and renewable sector, more information on our priorities and how to apply can be found on our funding page.

The charity is the sole shareholder of MCS and will receive a percentage of it business surpluses under an agreement made at the time of novation.
